Building Stronger Communities Since 1983

Because We All Deserve a
Place Where We Belong.

All communities, from the urban apartments of San Diego to the small town-feel of Stockton, have individuals with a variety of experiences and disabilities who need meaningful support to live independently, build confidence, and feel connected to the communities they call home. Adjoin exists to provide that support, creating pathways for people to discover their strengths, form authentic relationships, and thrive.

In the town of El Centro, Adjoin’s impact comes to life through artists living with disabilities like Valeria.

Before Adjoin, Valeria shared her experiences with depression, challenges with English, how easily overwhelmed she can feel when starting something new, and her need for clear and direct communication when following directions. Without consistent, individualized support, these needs often limited Valeria’s confidence and willingness to engage, leaving her quiet and hesitant to pursue new experiences.

Through Adjoin’s relationship-centered approach, Valeria found an environment where her needs were understood and her interests encouraged. Her love for art ultimately led her to the Adjoin ARTE program; a two-year, five-day-a-week, 6-hours-a-day, community-based creative arts and entrepreneurship day program that fosters creativity, craftsmanship, and independence for adults living with intellectual or developmental disabilities. She began the program alongside a small group of artists, learning together and building trust day by day.

“My depression decreased, I stay focused and engaged, and I feel excited every time I finish a new piece of jewelry. It has also helped me earn my own income, which makes me proud.” –Valeria

Through ARTE, artists explore painting, sculpture, photography, and more. With the guidance of her Adjoin team member, Valeria discovered a deep connection with making jewelry and beadwork. She was encouraged to pursue the art form that resonated most with her and supported with step-by-step instruction tailored to her learning style. Two years later, with light guidance and all the encouragement in the world, Valeria turned her colorful daydreams into a small business, selling her creations at events and launching her very own online store with business cards to match. Her goal is to promote and expand her business to sell jewelry regularly throughout the year.

“Adjoin invites me to different events where I can sell my jewelry, which has helped more people recognize my work. I also enjoy the social activities, like going out on Fridays with my ARTE group to the mall or the movies.”

Valeria’s transformation, from a quite person who sat a few chairs away from everyone else, to the vibrant artist confidently shaking hands with customers, reflects the heart of Adjoin’s mission.

Imperial County is Adjoin’s largest community with over 100 team members serving over 240 clients with disabilities. Nestled between Mexico, San Diego, and Arizona, is a vibrant desert and farming community that inspires connection, culture, and celebrations, and Adjoin helps ensure individuals with disabilities are active participants in all of it.

“My quality of life has improved because I’ve always enjoyed socializing and Adjoin gives me more opportunities to connect with people and be part of a community.” –Valeria

The ARTE program, Spanish for art and an acronym for Authentic Relationships Through Creative Expression, embodies Adjoin’s belief that with the right support, people can build confidence, form meaningful relationships, and turn their talents into lasting opportunities.
