History

Our Story

Adjoin first began its path as an extension of the Escondido Special Education Department with its first Executive Director a professor at San Diego State University. In collaboration with a group of concerned parents and individuals representing the schools who wanted more community-based opportunities for students with disabilities exiting high school, North County Career Development Program (later to become Client Development Programs: CDP, Community Catalysts of California in 2001 and now Adjoin in 2021) was created and incorporated as a nonprofit company in July of 1983.

Adjoin’s original purpose to help individuals with disabilities exiting from high school programs find meaningful work has grown and taken new pathways over the years now serving multiple populations in many diverse communities throughout California. Our primary sources of funding have been from the Regional Centers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the State Department of Rehabilitation to provide vocational programs. In 2011, we added a new funding source from the Department of Veteran Affairs providing services to Veteran families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless.

In the fall of 1989, Adjoin, known as Career Development at that time, became the first exclusively community-based program in California to be nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (C.A.R.F.).
